POLKURA is a wine growing project, started in 2002 by the Muñoz and Bruchfeld families, with the purpose of making an exceptional wine, based onthe exciting Syrah grape variety. Marchigue, the western end of the ColchaguaValley in Chile was chosen as the ideal site, for it has shown enormous potential to produce this varietal.
At the beginning of the summer in 2008, the Polkura Hill suffered a bush fire, threatening the vineyard and getting very close to the area where the Malbec is planted. Thanks to several neighbors, a disaster was avoided. Although a Malbec component has always been used in previous years for the Polkura Syrah blend, after this event this great Malbec deserved to be bottled on its own.
Deep inky purple color. Very intensely perfumed aromatics of violets coupled with figs and herbs. On the palate the wine is full bodied and has very structured tannins. Good balance between tannin and acidity. This wine is complex and has a long lasting finish.
Polkura Syrah Block G+I
In the Polkura Vineyard, the most interesting sites are definitely those oriented toward the south, only indirectly facing the sun. This is why these sites have less hours of sunshine and therefore lower heat accumulation, resulting in much more elegant wines. Already during vintage 2006 big differences in fruit flavor were noticed within these blocks. After one year of trials, the decision was made, to bottle the wines produced from blocks G and I separately.
Polkura Block G+I contains 2% Viognier, which gives the blend perfume and complexity. Since tannins in this wine are very powerful, the blend was aged in French oak barrels for 20 months, 65% of which were new casks. Before being released, the wine was bottle aged for 6 months.
Deep intense purple color. On the nose, herbs and aniseed coupled with black fruit and pepper appear. It is a full bodied wine on the palate. Its acidity is very well balanced with powerful tannins. There are a large amount of flavors that give complexity to this wine. It has great length with a soft finish.
Only 70 cases of Polkura GSM+T were produced. This wine comes from small blocks in the Polkura Vineyard. The varietal composition is 33% Grenache, 33% Syrah, 18% Mourvedre and 16% Tempranillo. Only three old barrels were produced.
The Grenache gives the wine a floral perfume, the Syrah provides structure through tannins and spices, the Mourvedre is the backbone with its acidity and the Tempranillo rounds out this blend with its deep fruit character.
Aylin Sauvignon Blanc
Aylin comes from the Leyda area in the San Antonio Valley, a few miles form the Pacific Ocean. Its cool climate and influence from the sea breezes make this valley birthplace for high quality, renowned New World Sauvignon Blancs. "Clarity and Transparency" is the meaning of its name in the native Mapuche language. That is exactly what is aimed for with this wine: a clear and vibrant Sauvignon Blanc with a strong mineral character and an evident sense of its origin. Aylin is "ocean, freshness and sea waves". This wine can be drunk alone but will shine even brighter when matched with a dish designed especially for it.
The vinification for this wine had some particularities. Like most Sauvignon Blancs, there was a maceration on skins prior to pressing for a few hours. A fairly clear juice was obtained after the must had been decanted. The fermentation temperature was slightly higher than normal. The goal was not to get too many fruity aromas that quickly disappear after a few months in the bottle, giving way to little more wild characters and mouth feel, durable over time. On the other hand 10% of the wine fermented in French oak barrels. Once the alcoholic fermentation had come to an end, half the wine fermented in barrels was transferred into stainless steel tanks; the rest remained in contact with oak. To increase the texture on the palate of this wine, lees stirring was performed on a daily basis, both in the barrels and in the tank. Normally stirring is done just 1 or 2 times a week. Finally, the wine was sealed under screw cap in order to secure freshness and to preserve all the aromas and characteristics inside the bottle
